Hate to See You Like This

by Abraham Garcia

I was in the cafeteria and the food smelled really delicious. I savored the delicious chicken.  As soon as my lunch period ended, I had an early dismissal. Sitting in the main office, talking quietly to each other, my parents waited for me and I was kind of surprised because I really don’t get early dismissals.

I asked my father, “What happened?  Did you buy the Land Rover?”

The day before my father was thinking of buying a Land Rover. So I thought that was why we were having an early dismissal. He didn’t respond, so I felt excited about home or where ever we were going. Wondering and worrying, I thought maybe my father had just had a bad day at work. I just listened to the radio and tried to not to worry about it.

We got home and my father started crying so my brother and I got scared and we started to panic.

We asked my father, “What’s wrong?”

He didn’t say anything at first then went and told my mother my grandfather had passed away. My mother’s depression was like a solar eclipse. Shocked, with a wondering look on her face, she went to her room, tears in her eyes. I felt so bad, I couldn’t hold it in; I felt tears coming down my face. I began to cry even more when I heard her crying for her father, it just destroyed me. I really don’t see her cry or see her sad. In the fact, she’s always happy and full of good humor. But her father had passed away. I understood her feelings because I thought about what I would feel if my father passed away, I would feel really sad and depressed.

My father opened the door and hugged and kissed my mother. “I love you and I hate to see you like this. I know if my dad died you would do the same for me.”
