A DARK CIRCLE

By Husam Farraj

drinks his whiskey each night
erases the past with the present
and wishes to bleed dry his sorrows
the man never sleeps, never awakes
he sings to himself in the mirror

leeches on another spirit
indigo: color of his eyes
fire: color of his eyes
eerie breath breathes in

sucks cigarettes
uses Jesus to get away with things
scratches his eyelids all day long
calls the hawks and the ravens his friends
and tries to impose the sun never to wake.

Darts that he throws at the mirror
the lightning of the night
opens his eyes
and he still sings
and he still drinks
all to himself.
