EMOTIONAL MOMENTby Dexter BoykinIt was close to Mother’s Day, and my mother was very hyper about it. She reminded me of a kid before Christmas. I planned on surprising her with a gift that she would look forward to. I was going to pay for her round-trip ticket to Florida. She wanted to go to Disney World, but she didn’t have enough money for her ticket. The day before Mother’s Day, I went to the bank to cash my check and to get her ticket. As I left the bank to go and get her ticket, a black truck pulled up and three men, all dressed in black, pulled out pistols and pointed them towards me. Then the man that was sitting in the passenger seat told me to give them all of my money. He gave me a look like he knew exactly what he was doing and didn’t care if he killed me or not. I was in total shock because I never thought that I would get robbed. So I gave him all of the money, including the ticket money and they drove off. I became very angry and frustrated. I got home. When I got there my mother was sitting on the porch, she could see the frustration on my face. She asked, “Is everything ok?” I ignored her, went to my room, slammed the door, and went to bed. I woke up the next morning to see my brother giving our mother breakfast-in-bed and my sister giving her a diamond necklace. I told her, “Happy Mother’s Day.” She said, “Thank you. Give me a hug.” As I walked towards her, I was going to explain what happened, but before I could open my mouth, she wanted me to hug her. She wouldn’t let me go. She told me, “As long as you continue to give me your love and friendship, then I will be the luckiest mother around.” Although I wasn’t able to give her what she really would have wanted, I did make her a happy and satisfied mother on Mother’s Day.
