BROKEN PROMISE
by Hugo Cuellar
It was a rainy 6th of January of the year 2007. It had been four weeks since the girl that I was in a relationship with, Adriana, had gone to México for a Christmas family gathering. It was a very exciting day for me because we were going to see each other again after four long weeks; we were meeting at the park that’s just around the corner from where she lives.
I left my house with great excitement and happiness. I ran from Archer Avenue as I heard the voice from the train station saying, “Inbound train towards the Loop will be arriving shortly.”
Once inside the train that I thought would take me to her happiness, I thought to myself, not all rainy days are sad days, like many people think. The doors opened and I saw the sign that tells you what station you’re at. I quickly got out of the train and ran down the stairs as if I was racing for a big prize. I left the train station and kept running until I got to the park. I just wanted to see her face again. The trees were wet, and every time there was wind, you could feel the breeze hitting your face. It was a great feeling to be there.
Then I saw her, there she was, sitting on an old, wet bench, raindrops hitting her dark hair. I slowly walked towards her and for the first time in a month I saw her beautiful light brown eyes.
As soon as we first made eye contact, something inside me made me think something was changed about her. She did not show any excitement. Not as excited as I was. I wrapped my arms around her and whispered, “I missed you so much.” She did not reply. Our silence was a big argument filled with yelling and questioning.
“Sit down,” she said. I slowly sat next to her as my heart beat increased.
“It’s not the same anymore.”
The few words that came out of her mouth and her unhappy look made me understand what was going on.
“I have to go home,” she said without looking at me in the eye.
“Bye,” she whispered as her words woke me up from a deep thought.
I stood, quiet, looking around me. I did not reply. I wanted to respect her decision.
She stood up and I stared at her moves. It was as if she had forgotten everything we had shared, it did not exist anymore. She turned around and left.
Love and happiness had turned into rejection and unwanted feelings. She left me in a dark room full of thoughts. She had broken our promise and love.
