INTRIGUING CAR
by Perla Cano
Standing in the middle of a flock of cars, listening to the spine-tingling uproar of the “big block” engines, I lived a moment of bliss with my father at an outdoor auto show. The bellowing of the cars sounded like loud barks coming from mad, wild dogs ready to hunt down their prey. All of the vehicles possessed their distinct, but deafening sound. The engines revved up, making a cloud of white smoke. The familiar smell of burning gasoline made me very dizzy, but it was not my first time experiencing that sensation.
Many times before when in my father’s garage I often watched him assemble cars and tried my best to help in any way that I could. It was overwhelming how much there was to learn about cars. Looking around through all of the cars there was a specific car that stood out. The glistening shine blinded me momentarily and left me in awe. The body of the car reminded me of one of the cars my father used to own. It was a different style, but it looked a lot like a Plymouth ‘Cuda, although the one at the show was much better looking. The slick cool violet color had a glossy finish that made it look incredible. The hood was raised and the polished chrome engine was clearly visible. The lustrous gold rims gleamed in the sunlight.
I stepped into the car and imagined myself driving down the highway and everyone staring at me. Sitting inside of the car, touching the velvety upholstery, reminded me of being at home in my comfortable bed. It seemed almost impossible to part from the mesmerizing new car smell. The beauty and elegance of the masterpiece could be stared at for days. It took my breath away and left me hypnotized.
Just then, I heard the mortal, mind-blowing explosion of the engine when it blew up. It made me shatter into minuscule pieces of glass never to be recuperated. I knew we shared that same feeling of devastation. Nevertheless, that moment was when I realized that my father and I had a passion for cars and that would always keep us connected for the rest of our lives.
